The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn in theaters Nov. 16, 2012

This just in from Summit Entertainment:

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 will open in theatres on November 16, 2012! Directed by Bill Condon, the astonishing conclusion to the series illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.

That means Part 2 is essentially coming out an entire year after Part 1. Sort of a ridiculous wait, in my opinion — especially considering the films are being made back-to-back. Why not release Part 2 over the summer (like Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows). Clearly we’ve seen with Eclipse that The Twilight Saga can handle a summer box office.

Perhaps Summit is nervous about big competition from the likes of the new Christopher Nolan Batman movie, the third Transformers movie, and other blockbusters slated for Summer 2012. That’s all I can think.

Alright, that’s my two cents. Share your thoughts in the comments below!

UPDATE: HitFix has some interesting theories on the reasons for the one year wait.

  1. I think they should just release them a few months a part. What Twihard isnt going to pay to see both of them anyway?

  2. It may have to do with the director. Remember, New Moon and Eclipse had two different directors. Chris Weitz was editing and finishing New Moon while David Slade was filming Eclipse. Both Breaking Dawns are being done by the same director. He can’t do both at the same time, so trying to release them within 6 months of each other may not be possible. I imagine there will be a lot more CGI in the 2nd part as well.

Before anyone points out the HP and Deathly Hallows will have a 6-month difference in release dates…realize that DH filmed from Feb 2009-June 2010 (according to Wikipedia). If BD followed THAT kind of schedule, with filming beginning this fall, Part One wouldn’t even be out until around June 2012!

  3. AT Least they did not make the date

  4. It wouldn’t surprise me if the summer release of Eclipse has hurt some sales, particularly from the “Twi-Mom” group of fans. I know I personally haven’t been able to see Eclipse as many times as I’ve wanted to simply because my son is out of school. I can’t afford a babysitter every time I need an Edward and Major Jasper Whitlock fix. πŸ˜‰

    • Agreed.

And I still think, looking at what’s due out in Summer 2012, Summit does NOT want to compete. (Remember how massive “The Dark Knight” was? The third one is going to be even bigger. Plus, you’ve got “Avengers,” “Transformers 3,” “POTC 4” … the list goes on and on. Next summer is going to be HUGE for blockbusters. (Which is good, b/c this summer has been decidedly lame for summer movies … besides “Eclipse,” that is. Well, and “Inception” — which totally rocked.)

      • Summit is definitely careful about what other movies are coming out, especially big ones like Harry Potter, etc.

This summer HAS been pretty lame movie-wise, which should have been good for Eclipse…

  5. Why Can’t they put it in theaters on
It’s not long from part one….
