About Us

NovelNoviceIcon-1

Novel Novice Twilight was founded by Tiffany Truitt in May 2008, after discovering she could get her 8th grade lit students (labeled as “difficult to teach”) excited about reading when she sparked their interest with Twilight.

Since then, interest in Novel Novice Twilight has grown – and so has our site, with a dedicated staff, a dedicated following and the support of fellow fansites.

Our goal is to explore the relationship between the Twilight Saga and the fans. By doing so, we hope to find new ways to encourage teens and people of any age to read more and further their education.

Through Novel Novice Twilight, we’ve helped encourage our visitors to read more with our regular book recommendations. We’ve also explored other creative media – such as film, television and art. We encourage writing through our regular fan fiction challenges. We help our visitors explore history with our lessons based on the Twilight Saga. We help our visitors relate to current events through projects, such as 2008’s “Team Edward vs. Team Jacob” political-style campaign, and our 2009 follow-up, “The Team Switzerland Project,” which is our Twilight-style approach to bipartisanship. We ask our visitors to think critically of the world around them with our series, “What Would Carlisle Do.”

Novel Novice Twilight also encourage teachers to use Twilight in the classroom, and have featured teachers and their students who share their stories with us. Ms. Truitt has also shared her scholarly papers relating to Twilight, as well as her Twilight lesson plan.

In addition to our focus on education, Novel Novice Twilight is also a fan site featuring hugely popular downloads (including desktop wallpapers) and regular Twilight Saga news. We also encourage a sense of community amongst our visitors, inviting fans to send in their personal stories about Twilight in the classroom, Twilight trips and from Twilight events (such as the midnight release of Breaking Dawn and opening-weekend screenings of the Twilight movie.)

MEET THE STAFF

Founder — Tiffany Truitt’s Story

As a new teacher you hear many things, some are legends, some are horror stories, and a small amount are the truth. At the particular school I work at, I heard a lot of horror stories. Not something you want to hear as a new teacher. After two years teaching, I have learned to listen to nothing but my heart. My students, despite being told otherwise, were and are amazing. They prove every stereotype created about them wrong everyday. They were the ones to introduce me to the Twilight series, which has quickly become an obsession. In spring of 2008, I started a small Twilight club with some of my students who were reading the books. It soon turn into a phenomena I never could of imagined. It was an epidemic. We then decided to create a blog to document our Twilight adventures. With over 12,000 hits in a few short months, we were inspired to do more. Our new site is a direct result of this. Our site is a place where Twilight fans can not only get the latest news, gush about their favorite characters, create videos to support Team Edward or Team Jacob, but a place where education is spotlighted. The Twilight series helped me to build strong relationships with my students, it encouraged reluctant readers to dive into an epic, and I am proud to call myself a Twilighter.

Sara

My name is Sara, I’m in my 20s and I’m a TV news producer in Portland, Oregon. I work on the morning newscast, which means I work weird hours in the middle of the night/very early morning hours, but I absolutely love it. Besides my love of all things news and Twilight, I also enjoy reading other novels, writing my own stories, boating on the river and hanging out with friends. I hope to help Novel Novice Twilight become a popular Twilight website. I truly believe that it is unique among other Twilight fansites; I am especially passionate about the goal of getting more people to enjoy reading!

How did you find out about Twilight?

I first saw Twilight on a bookstore shelf while browsing one day and thought it looked interesting. And once I started reading, I couldn’t stop and the obsession grew from there.

What is your favorite book in the series?

Eclipse — Chapter 20, in particular.

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Team Edward, all the way. But I’ve always preferred vampires. I know, I’m biased. I don’t care. Jacob annoys me. And I love Edward.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

7.5 … I don’t eat, sleep and breathe Twilight — but I check some of my favorite websites daily (thanks to my RSS feed at work!) and I do write some fanfiction, besides helping out with Novel Novice.

Libby

My name is Libby and I’m a 31-year-old happily married writer who has managed to squeeze unnecessary Twilight references into three of the last five articles I’ve written. But when I’m not writing about vampire baby names or sharing Twilight news with my sister, I can be found writing for online and print publications about relationships, education, finance, and everything in between.

How did you find out about Twilight?

I have been a voracious reader since I was big enough to hold a book by myself and if I could live at the local Borders, I would. For months I had passed by this shiny black book with the tempting red apple on the front. Every time I picked it up I saw the word “vampire” and promptly put it back down. Then one day, something made me think, “Buy this.” Life really hasn’t been the same since.

What is your favorite book in the series?

Twilight. Gets better every time.

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

I am Team Edward all the way. However, upon subsequent readings of the saga, I’m learning to appreciate Jacob (mostly his humor) and understand Bella’s dilemma (rather than silently cursing her for hurting Edward and being silly enough to even think twice about him). Still, when someone voices their preference for Jacob I can’t help but get a little annoyed.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

I’ve finally come to a place where Twilight, which existed at the start as a full-time obsession, has comfortably turned into daily appreciation (to the relief of my slightly confused but very tolerant husband). So while it was easily a 10+ at the start, I’m now in the comfy 7-ish range. No story or character has ever captured and held me like the whole of the Twilight saga and Edward (and, subsequent to the reading of all things Twilight, no other book has even come close to making me feel so much. Sigh). The draw is indefinable, though I speculate that my subconscious is held most of all by the devotion that Edward has for his Bella.

Theresa

My name is Theresa Largusa, I’m 44, and I live in McKinney, Texas (I’m a recent transplant after living most of my life in the western half of Washington State.) I’ve always loved books, so reading is important. I enjoy historical biographies, historical novels (I just plain like history!), mysteries, satire and any story starring a vampire. I also like to pretend to knit (I’m not very good), and growing veggies is pretty enjoyable, too.

How did you find out about Twilight?

It was Spring of 2008 and I was walking by a book shop one day that had the most intriguing window display. The main banner read: “Want to know what to read after Harry?” That was the first time I saw those striking graphics on the covers of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse. Bought the first book and finished all three in about two weeks.

What is your favorite book in the series?

My favorite is Eclipse. The stakes are higher in this book and there is a lot of tension, conflict and humor, which sounds sort of odd, but the combo makes for a great read!

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Team Jacob and all the cute (and ferocious) wolves!

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

I’d say I’m a 10, which sounds good and obsessed, but I pale in comparison to some of my friends who are off the chart (more like a scale of 1 to 20!)

Christie

My name is Christie and I’m a 32-year-old stay-at-home mom living in Maryland. In my pre-mom life, I was a Web Developer, but now my life revolves around being a wife and mom, and, well, Twilight. Before Twilight took over, I enjoyed crafty hobbies such as scrapbooking, sewing and quilting, and needlework. Thanks to Twilight, I got involved with fan fiction and discovered that I have a passion for writing and, especially, helping other authors improve their stories.

How did you find out about Twilight?

I was really bummed about Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince being postponed and someone on a message board I frequent mentioned the Twilight movie taking it’s spot and how all the women in her office were going crazy over these books. I believe my response was along the lines of “I’m not really into vampires, but I’ll give it a try.”

Oh, if I only knew what I was in for…

What is your favorite book in the series?

Twilight, but I really, really love Midnight Sun.

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Jacob who?!

I am most definitely 100% Team Edward. Sometimes I feel bad for Jacob…I mean, how do you compete with Edward?!

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

If not a 10, pretty darn close to it. I think that quote “I can turn anything into a Twilight reference” was written for me!

Stephanie

My name is Stephanie, and I’m a 27 year-old graphic designer from Ohio. I’ve always been interested in art, music, and other creative avenues. I love movies, and I probably watch more TV than is healthy on a regular basis, but I am incapable of resisting the charms of my favorite shows. I also have my own personal library. Books and reading are the perfect escape for me, so I have this addiction to purchasing any book that captures my interest in the store. On a similar note, I love to write, which is how I fell into the world of fan fiction. And I love shopping – it’s a great stress reliever. I also have a one year-old Yorkshire terrier-poodle mix named Bella, and it is a testament to the Twilight series’ popularity that most people always assume her namesake is our favorite danger-magnet. And of course, that is the case.

How did you find out about Twilight?

My mom works in a school library, and about two or three years ago she heard of this new book series involving vampires. She told me that I might want to look into it because I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. So, I went to the neighborhood Borders and, since the paperback version of Twilight wasn’t too expensive, I picked it up along with the special edition of New Moon. And it was a good thing I did, because after I started reading … needless to say, I was captivated.

What is your favorite book in the series?

I have to go with Eclipse. It covers so much of the emotional spectrum, and defines Edward and Bella’s relationship as well as heightening the tension of the love triangle. But I must say that Breaking Dawn is a close second, simply because I love closure, and I’d been waiting to read about their wedding day since the end of New Moon. Plus, since I started writing my own fan fiction of Book Three from Edward’s point of view, I have reached a new appreciation for the last novel in the series. (NNT’s note: Stephanie’s story is called “Metamorphosis” and it’s superb. The first chapter was actually the second-place winner in our August 2008 fan fiction challenge.)

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Team Edward, all the way. Don’t get me wrong, Jacob is a great guy – but I am a firm believer in true love overcoming all obstacles, and let’s face it: vampires are sexy. There’s that whole ‘sparkly’ thing, the ‘I love you too much to kill you’ attitude, and I think the ‘thirsty’ black eyes are incredibly hypnotic. Seriously, who doesn’t prefer air conditioning to a space heater?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

I don’t know if I’m a definite 10, because I’m sure that there are others out there more obsessed than me, but I’d have to say that I’m awfully close – a solid 9. I check for news on the movies every day, I hear songs and they remind me of characters or moments in the series, I must have at least 6 or 7 Twilight-related clothing items (and plan on buying more), I read and write Twilight fan fiction, my iPod has four playlists dedicated to the series, and I have managed to recruit my mom, sister, and two friends into the fandom. What’s more, I have the tendency to squeal every time I glimpse a Volvo on the streets around town.

Melody

My name is Melody. I am 33 years old and happily married to my childhood sweetheart. Together we have two school-aged boys who both play a lot of hockey and golf. I am a horticulturalist – and I love playing in mine and other people’s gardens, but right now I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to focus on my boys. In my spare time – when I’m not taking one of the boys to one of their sporting events or practices I like to cook, read, write and re-design my garden. I enjoy Yoga, curling and am training for a half-marathon.

How did you find out about Twilight?

I’ve always been a reader – and books about vampires always seem to make it into my pile. However I didn’t get around to reading the Twilight series until AFTER I watched the movie. (My hubby gets the points for suggesting the movie.) The very next morning I went and bought Twilight, the next day I was back at the book store buying New Moon. Not finding a copy of Eclipse in the town where I live, I drove to the next city and bought both Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. I devoured the entire series in just under a week. The movie was good – the books were amazing.

What is your favorite book in the series?

My favourite book in the (official) series is Eclipse. I didn’t realize how much of a sappy romantic I was until Edward left in New Moon. I really enjoyed Midnight Sun – I loved Edward’s point of view.

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Team Edward – all the way! I guess I’m a vampire girl.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

I’m at a comfortable 7-8 now that I’ve read the series several times over (okay 6 times). In the beginning I couldn’t get enough Twilight. I really like fan fics and although I’ve written a few pieces I haven’t posted any of my own stories yet. I have tried reading other series since reading Twilight – but nothing has caught my attention so wholly. I think I’ve finally hit a happy medium – my boys don’t think I’m too crazy and my husband doesn’t want to commit me. I am re-introducing myself to housework and television. I don’t think I could lend my Twilight Saga books to anyone just yet – but the books aren’t carried in my bag everywhere I go either.

Lee

I am a mother of two wonderful children (both of whom are too young to read Twilight…yet) and I work full time in the customer service field.

How did you find out about Twilight?

Really, when the movie was announced. I was a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly and saw the cover spread on Rob & Kristen getting the leads…and I thought, “What’s a Twilight?” Then I found out more information about it and I resisted reading it, because I didn’t want to buy into the hype. I mean, c’mon. The entire concept sounded corny to me, a mom in my 30s. Well, I wanted to see the movie but my friends who had read the book and watched the movie recommended I read the book first. I did, after borrowing a co-worker’s copy. Then, I fell in LOVE. I’ve been hopeless about it ever since.

What is your favorite book in the series?

Eclipse, hands down. I am reading it again right now. The drama of the newborns throughout the book, leading to the end. The jealously between Jake and Edward. The leg-hitching scene. {squeal!} Sorry, I need to take a moment…

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Team Edward. He’s romantic, smart, talented…his devotion to his beloved Bella. What’s not to like? (I could go on, but I think this is a family site. LOL.)

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

Hmmmm….There are some pretty obsessive fans out there. Compared to them, I’m probably a seven. I don’t have a silver Volvo or anything, so I can’t be a 10, but I’m more obsessed than what is probably healthy. I’m still waiting for my husband to sparkle…

Meet Stephanie #2 (which is what we’re calling her for now, ’cause we have another Stephanie on staff, too!)

At the moment, I’m a 30-year-old, stay-at-home mom to a 3-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl, but I have a master’s degree in English and have worked at a couple newspapers doing copy editing and page layout. Until this past August, I’d lived my whole life in northeast Ohio, but we moved to Mobile, AL, for my husband’s work. Not sure how long we’ll be on our “Southern adventure.”

How did you find out about Twilight?

I’d seen the beautiful book covers in the bookstores a couple times but didn’t actually buy Twilight until just after the movie came out and there was all the press coverage. I had just had our second child and needed a diversion from mommyhood. I actually gave up much-needed sleep in order to finish the series as fast as possible!

What is your favorite book in the series?

Hands down, “New Moon” is my favorite — it’s so unexpected for an author to “kill off” a main character (or send him away) that I was impressed at how well Stephenie Meyer handled this, and how well she filled the gap with Jacob. Plus, it’s just such a moody, dark book that you can wallow in. The cliff diving scene is just amazing (can’t wait to see it on film!). Plus, Jacob reminds me of some of my guy friends growing up.

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

I am completely Team Switzerland! I love them both for very different reasons — Edward for his devotion and intensity and Jacob for his sense of humor and down-to-earth personality.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your obsession as a fan?

I have my “10” moments but I think I’m usually around an “8.” I have two young children so I don’t have the stamina to always maintain a “10!”

  1. I am a 48 year old wife, mother, teacher. I noticed one of my students reading the twilight novel and inquired about it. Then later my daughter had a friend to introduce her to Twilight. Then we were both hooked, lined, and sunk over Twilight. We would so love to be vagabonds and travel to Vancouver and hover to get a glimpse of any of the cast memebers. My students will gladly tell anyone their teacher is a “Twilight Freak”. I have the poster and books in my room. I have also taken pics of my students caught reading the books and posted them on a board reading, “Got Twilight?”. They know how to get their teacher distracted, just talk Twilight.
