Fan Fiction Challenges

Click here to see details for the July-August 2010 Fan Fiction Challenge!

May-June 2010 Fan Fiction Challenge – The Wedding!

Let’s celebrate the official announcement of Breaking Dawn’s director by writing about the wedding of August 2006 — Edward and Bella’s of course!

Here’s what we want you to do:  Choose one of the characters from the list below as your point-of-view character attending Edward and Bella’s wedding.  Your story can take place any point before the actual ceremony begins to any point after Edward and Bella leave for the honeymoon, but you must include either the ceremony or the reception (or both). Your story must fit into the canon Twilght universe created by the books, not only in what happens at the wedding but the personality of the character you choose.

Characters you can choose from (please choose only one):

  • Any of the Cullens except Edward
  • Charlie Swan
  • Renee Dwyer
  • Phil Dwyer
  • Billy Black
  • Sue Clearwater
  • Seth Clearwater
  • Tanya (from the Denali clan)
  • Kate (from the Denali clan)
  • Carmen (from the Denali clan)
  • Eleazer (from the Denali clan)
  • Angela Weber’s father (Rev. Weber)
  • Angel Weber
  • Angela’s mother (Mrs. Weber)
  • Ben Cheney
  • Mike Newton
  • Jessica Stanley

There may have been others present at the wedding, but we know for certain these people were there for both the ceremony and the reception so we ask that you stick to this list.  Your entry will be judged on the quality of your story as well as attention to detail in staying true to canon.

Rules & Guidelines:

  • Stories must use proper grammar & spelling; any story with frequent grammatical & spelling errors will be automatically disqualified.
  • Please use a beta. A beta is a person who helps you edit and improve your story.  One place to find a qualified beta is Project Team Beta.  Fill out their Story Application to get started. Be sure to give yourself ample time if you choose to use a beta. It can take up to a week to go through the beta process.  Include the contest deadline in your story application so the betas are aware.
  • Entries should be at least 500 words long.
  • Please keep the content of your story to PG-13 or lower rating.
  • With your story, please include a title and your penname.
  • You may submit as many stories as you like, but only one will be eligible to place in the top three.

How to Enter:

We’d like to try something different this time and see how it works out.  We’d like to have all submissions posted on and then we will link all of your stories to our profile.  This will allow everyone’s story to be shared, not just the winners.  We may even have voting and choose a readers’ choice and judge’s choice for the challenge.

So, before you will be able to submit your entry for the contest, you will need a account. Don’t wait until the last minute to sign up for an account because there is a 2-day waiting period from the time you sign up for your account until you are able to post your first story.

After you have written your story and edited and perfected it, upload it to using the directions on the website.  Then send us a Private Message (PM) to our account with the link to your story.  If for any reason you are unable to send a PM to our account, you can email

No submissions will be accepted after the deadline.  PLEASE do not wait until the last minute.  Sign up for your account early — it’s OK to have an account without any stories right away.

If you have problems signing up for an account or submitting your story on, please email me at so we can work it out.  Again, please don’t wait until the last minute.

  1. I submitted a really cool story for the last challenge – I can’t wait to see the winners and to start writing for the the next fan fiction contest! 🙂

  2. Good luck to everyone who enters!

  3. would Bella telling Charlie/Renee be considered part of Eclipse? or is that too much toward Breaking Dawn?

    • obviously not from Bella’s POV though

    • Let me check the books and get back to you on that…If I recall, it kind of happens between books and is a flashback in BD?

    • The last chapter ends with Edward and Bella going to tell Charlie, but Jake’s epilogue includes the delivery of the wedding invitation. So technically, Bella telling Charlie and Renee happens in Eclipse between the last chapter and the epilogue.

I would just recommend you study the flashback in BD to get the details, and make sure you are including enough extras from the POV character to meet the goals of the challenge.

  4. Is third person POV allowed, if the scene is original and you want to incorporate more than one non-Bella perspective?

    • Even in third person, you should generally only be in one character’s head at a time in a single scene.

If you can write the scene and incorporate multiple POVs without confusing or jarring the reader, go for it. But my recommendation would be to pick one character and stick with him or her.

      • Not really, 3rd person can either be an outside narrarator knowing only one persons thoughts and feelings, or it can know multiple peoples thoughts and feelings.

      • @Amber – as I said, *generally* it’s better to only be in one character’s head at a time. Yes, omniscient third person is possible, but it is harder to write well. Like I said, if you can pull it off without confusing the reader, go for it.

But my advice remains the same (for simplicity), pick one character and stick to it for at least a section. If you want to pick up another character in another section, no problem. If you want to jump around from character to character every other paragraph, I’m not going to stop you…but if it gives me a headache and I have trouble keeping track of whose head I’m in, that’s going to affect the judging of your entry.

  5. I am really excited about this challenge! I haven’t read Breaking Dawn, but I LOVED Eclipse, so this should be fun. I already have several good ideas. There are SO MANY neat characters in Eclipse that it’s going to be IMPOSSIBLE to choose JUST ONE SCENE for my contest entry! 🙂

  6. I’ve got a pretty good idea, but my problem is making the story unique – it has to stand out. And I need to find a copy of Eclipse somewhere or I’ll mess up the dialogue! 😦

Either way, this challenge is going to be fun! 🙂

    (I love using these smileys!)

  7. I’m going INSANE because I simply can’t wait to see the winners of the previous Fan Fiction Challenge, “Love Story”. I really enjoyed writing my story and am curious to see what everyone else wrote. 🙂

And I am really anxious to see the winners! 🙂

  9. […] Check out our March-April Eclipse Fan Fiction Challenge for your chance to win some Twilight Saga g…! Entries are due April 30th. […]

  10. I wonder if we are allowed Gay themes. I mean it would be age appropriate.

    • While I am not opposed to gay themes (I write my own Edward/Jasper slash stories in fact), the challenge does specify it must stay in canon. If you aren’t sure if your idea would fit in canon, you are welcome to email me to talk about it. (see email address above in the post)

  11. Do we have to wait until the contest is over and winners are announced before we can post our contest entries?

    • No you can post on other sites. This isn’t an anonymous contest as there’s no public voting. 🙂

      • When will the winners be posted. If the same story is entered in an anonymous contest (that just happens to have the same due date) could we be outed by winning? Can we stay anonymous?

      • I try to post the winners by the 10th of the next month. If you are a winning entry, I can list you as anonymous, but make sure you put a note in your entry to remind me. 🙂

  12. @TwilightFreak#1 – not do what?

    • The gay themes thing.

      • You aren’t required to read any entries you don’t want to, of course.

Gay themed entries are allowed but they have to fit in the parameters of the challenge, including being PG-13 and fit into canon. I suppose it is possible, but I’m not sure how likely, to write a story with a same-sex couple that fits into canon. I’m not thinking of any ways off the top of my head but other people are much more creative than I am.

But, again, even if someone did write an entry for a challenge with a same-sex couple, and even if that entry did place in the top 3 and was posted on the site, you wouldn’t have to read it if you didn’t want to.

  13. I have Office 2007. is there a problem if I send the fanfic as a .docx file? or do i have to make it compatible?

  14. Love it. I’m trying to write an entry.
If you like this, try this contest. it’s interesting.
    Awesome site, and challenge.

  15. im from england so i was going to enter but theres no point cause i wont get the prize 😦

  16. I just entered a story like 5 minutes ago. It was really fun to write! 🙂

  17. OS submitted! Woohoo!

  18. Are we allowed to post our stories on other websites prior to the contest results being announced?

  19. Hrm… So an idea just hit me today. I hope that I can get it finished by Friday.

    • Good luck. That won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. I just barely finished my entry for the last contest in time. 🙂 The up side of submitting stories at the last minute is that you aren’t really overly anxious for the contest results.

      • Finished! Yay!! Can’t wait to see the winners!

      • Congratulations on getting it submitted on time. What was it about? (I won’t copy or anything. I really am just curious, and the contest is over anyway.) 🙂

      • I wrote about Riley meeting Victoria and what lead up to his transformation. 🙂

      • Awesome! Riley made a short appearance in one of my two contest entries. He’s a neat character. I wonder if your story will win – it sounds cool. 🙂

  20. Approx. 15 hours left to enter! 🙂

    • I can’t wait to read the winning entries, and I’m even more excited for the next Fan Fiction Challenge. 🙂 I wonder what that one will be about…

  21. Still reading through entries for the Eclipse challenge. Judging is going to be hard on this one. You guys did a great job!!

    • Will the winners be posted today? It is May 10th, after all. I’m so excited! 😀

      • I know…it’s May 10th. I should be posting the winners today. And maybe I’ll be able to tonight. But you guys made it so hard on me by writing such great stories! 🙂 There are 7 or 8 really good ones that I have to somehow narrow down to only 3!

      • Great. Sorry if I’m being annoyingly excited. Good luck narrowing down the stories. 🙂

      • No problem. 🙂 I know it’s hard to be patient when you’re so excited.

      • I actually sent you an e-mail too asking when the results would be out (before you responded to my comment). Go ahead and delete it.

      • Yeah I saw. Figured I’d reply here so everyone could see. 🙂

      • I got a little overexcited. I should have just waited for you to comment back here at NNT.

      • Glad I’m not the only one who is super excited! 🙂

      • @Cassie, I’m totally excited for the results! I am anxious to read the winning stories. Who knows – maybe yours will win. And the Eclipse Challenge has prizes! 😀

  22. Where will winners be announced?

    • They’re usually announced on the Home Page of the site initially, but they’re also located in the Challenge Winners section of the website.

  23. Just checking in to see if any has any problems and/or questions about posting on fanfiction for this challenge?

    • Does make personal information (full name, where you live, age, etc.) publicly visible? I would prefer to have some privacy.

      • Excellent question.

No, ff does not display that information and you are not required to provide it either.

You can see my profile here:

I do not give my real name, location, etc. Even my email address is not shared. Other FF members can send me messages via Private Message through the website.

(as I’m looking at my profile I’m realizing I need to update it. LOL)

      • One more question. Strangers can send you private messages? Is there a way to prevent that and only receive messages from people you know like on YouTube?

      • It appears to be all or nothing. You can turn off Private Messages altogether or turn them on.

For what it’s worth, I’ve only had one person send me a PM that was not a reply to one I had sent. And it was a question about formating her story, nothing vulgar or inappropriate or anything. But if you are truly concerned about it, you could just turn PMs off.

      • Great. Just one more question – how do story reviews work? Can those be allowed/unallowed?

      • You can choose to allow or not allow anonymous reviews. But I don’t think you can not allow reviews 100%. (I think reviews by registered users are always allowed)

Inappropriate reviews can be reported to admins, but it’s not something I’ve ever had to deal with. I love getting reviews on my stories.

  24. Alright, it’s official. I have a account under the username TwilightFreakNumberOne, and I’ll be able to post stories in only 2 days! Woohoo! 😀

Thanks for all of your question-answering, Addicted2Edward. 🙂

  25. just curious, but why no Edward POVs?

    • To challenge you to really get into the mind of a secondary character.

And also to challenge you to view the wedding from the outside, not as either the bride or the groom.

To make it a little harder, basically. 😉

  26. *sad* Still no winners?

  27. I know, I know. I’m sorry.

Today. I PROMISE. I’m off to my son’s baseball game right now but will make a post later.

    • AWESOME! Thank you, addicted2edward. I understand that you’re busy; I’m just excited! 😀

  28. Just uploaded three Twilight stories on fanfiction – finally, I can start posting! 🙂

  29. How many people here have accounts on FanFiction, anyway?

  30. When does the next FanFic Challenge get announced? 🙂

    • It should be announced right now, but I’m a little slow. LOL

I’ve only just caught up on lack of sleep from two late night showings of Eclipse and now I’ve got family in for the weekend. (yay)

So, Monday at the latest. I also want to get all the entries from the Wedding challenge posted on the FF account.

      • Wow – TWO SHOWINGS! I’m going to see it tomorrow.

Anyway, good luck catching up on sleep. And have fun with you family! (Can’t wait to see who wins the BD Wedding Challenge.)

        Thanks! 🙂

      • Yes! The midnight showing (part of the triple feature, which was AWESOME) and then again in IMAX. I loved it! I’m crossing my fingers that the stars will align and my inlaws will be able to babysit on Monday so I can go again with hubby.

To be honest, I haven’t even read the challenge entries yet…so I can’t wait to see who wins either. LOL

      • OH MY GOSH – just saw Eclipse… it was EPIC! Werewolves, Cullens, vampires, newborns, Riley, Victoria, romance, action… AWESOMENESS! Better than New Moon and Twilight combined! Slightly different from the Eclipse novel but very well done and true to the book! Although I do wish they had further explained Sam’s imprint. And I missed the part in the book when Jacob said, “Did you just seriously stamp your foot? I thought girls only did that on TV.”
