It’s been a while, but I’m back with a collection of Reading Recommendations for you from NNT staffers and NNT visitors alike! And there’s nothing like another snowstorm (yes, it snowed here in Oregon yet again this winter!) to make you want to get all cozy & curl up with a good book! So, without further ado …
NNT staffer Phinecia has this recommendation:
The Turning: Blood Ties Book 1 by Jennifer Armintrout
(for age 16+ some sexual content)
This is a really good vampire book but there are three sex scenes not appropriate for younger readers. It’s not as good as Twilight but honestly what is?
Dr. Carrie Ames is finally living the life she’s always wanted as an ER doctor. Then one night a John Doe comes through the doors and he his horribly beaten and slashed. It’s the worst she’s ever seen and she loses her lunch for the first time ever. She decides she won’t be defeated like that and goes to the morgue to face her fear. Only John Doe isn’t human and isn’t dead. He’s one of the most powerful vampires alive and he tries to drain her. She fights back and stabs him. His blood shoots into her mouth and surprise, she wakes up a vampire. Follow Carrie on her journey to learn the truth about vampires and her sire John Doe. Find out why she is bound to him for eternity and how she overcomes her blood tie.
I’d like to recommend:
Generation Dead by Daniel Waters
This book is to zombies what Twilight is to vampires … it’s a twist on the supernatural teen thriller/romance. It’s also a very compelling look at the issues of racism, bigotry and prejudice. In this book, the zombies aren’t the bad guys — they are teens who died, and mysteriously came back to life. They have issues — their flesh is decayed; they are dead. But they are also beautiful, complex creatures facing a lot of hurdles in their lives. I seriously hope the author continues this series, because I would love to continue reading about these characters.
The Sookie Stackhouse Books by Charlaine Harris
For mature readers only — 18+
These books are seriously for adult readers only — but they are a very entertaining, highly addictive series about a telepathic waitress who falls in love with a vampire … and subsequently becomes part of a supernatural world that’s a whole lot bigger than she originally thought. These books are also the inspiration for the HBO series “True Blood.” The first book in the series is Dead Until Dark.
NNT visitor Hazel recommends:
Faith & Fairies by C.S. Haviland
NNT visitor Michelle B. recommends:
City of Bones (Book One of the Mortal Instruments) By Cassandra Clare
It’s an amazing mixture of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter, and has enough drama to keep anyone satisfied.
The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld
Although is doesn’t have any hot bloodsuckers it’s worth the read.
The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Again no Vampires or mythical demons but the story is great! And the characters have that Twilight familiarity to them.
